Embracing the Summer Solstice at Light of Day Organic's Tea Farm

As the Sun reaches its zenith and bathes our Farm in golden warmth, we at Light of Day Organics are filled with gratitude and excitement. The summer solstice marks a pivotal moment in nature's calendar, a time when the Earth leans closest to the Sun, blessing us with extended daylight and vibrant energy.

Here on our farm in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan, we celebrate this celestial event with reverence, gratitude and joy. There is a wonderful buzzing in the air from the abundant  pollinators,  including a visiting honeybee hive from our friends at Bailey's Farms Kombucha.  Their industrious hum echoes vitality & assures an abundance of colorful, pristine, nutrient-dense organic ingredients this growing season, for which we are deeply appreciative. Our hoop houses are bursting with flourishing Camellia Sinensis ("Tea") plants, each leaf nurtured by the sun's nourishing rays. Lavender is also at its prime, and fresh bouquets are stocked in the shop; come get yours this weekend!  Angela, our courageous leader, is finding post-operative healing and renewed energy by enjoying engagement with tea shop visitors and leading guests on private tours of this glorious Tea farm. We are thankful for her excellent medical team.

As we embrace the Summer Solstice this year, we invite you to join us in savoring the flavors of this season. Whether you prefer the crisp vegetal nature of a Green Tea or the soothing, diverse flavor profiles of Tisanes, each sip invites you to pause, reflect, and connect with the beauty and healing opportunities of nature.

From our farm to your cup, may this Solstice season bring you warmth, joy, and a renewed appreciation for the simple pleasures found in a perfect cup of tea!  All the best, Debbie

Let's talk Cold Teas and Tisanes!

Here are some of our FAVORITE Teas and Tisanes for making cold teas:

Hummingbird Nectar
This is such a winner! This cheery and cherry-red fruit mélange is just a delicious and refreshing tisane! By far our most popular Tisane for iced Tea. We love to freeze into popsicles or iced cube trays to then add to white wine, beer, ginger-ale or juices. Makes a fantastic sangria base! Naturally caffeine-free

Creamy Earl Grey
Our best seller. This award-winning favorite continues to please... like no other Earl Grey you have ever had...just SUPERB!! Naturally caffeinated.

Bumble Blossom Oolong
Peachy-notes. A deeply oxidized wiry Oolong Tea that is naturally caffeinated. Blended with Red Top Clover Blossoms from our Organic and Demeter Biodynamic Farm.

Cherry Mint
A lightly colored pink infusion of delicate new growth Tea leaves, and subtle cherry, mint and tart notes from the Hibiscus. White Tea grown here on our Biodynamic farm is used in this popular, refreshing blend. Naturally lightly-caffeinated.

How to Prepare Your Cold Tea:
(We suggest using a quart size Ball jar)
  • Bring a quart of water to a boil.
  • Fill your infuser with 2 teaspoons of loose tea or tisane. Set aside
  • Pour the water in the Ball jar and then set the infuser in the top of the jar resting on the rim. (Keep the lid on the infuser while steeping.)
  • Allow to steep until desired strength is reached, and then remove infuser (overnight is nice for black teas and tisanes). Keep in mind that green tea can become bitter if steeped too long.
  • Store in refrigerator for up to two weeks, and serve over ice.

Fun Ideas Using Cold Tea and Tisanes!

Light of Day’s Creamy Early Grey Slushy made with Tequila or Gin
Prepare cold tea in advance. Then, in blender, combine 2 cups ice, 2 cups steeped and cooled tea, and 4 ounces of Sparkle Donkey Vanilla Tequila or Iron Fish’s delicious local Gin. Pulse blender until ice is at “slushy” consistency. Pour into 2 tall salt-rimmed glasses and garnish with Lime wedge.

Hummingbird Nectar Tea ice cubes for making beautiful cocktails and "mocktails" (non-alcoholic cocktails)
Prepare cold Tea or Tisane. Let cool completely, then pour into ice cube trays or popsicle trays. Add a cherry, a few berries or an orange slice if desired to each tray. Freeze overnight, then store in Ziplock bags for easy access to add to your favorite beer, wine, soda, juice or Tea. Excellent source of vitamin C!
