Today is May Day!
May Day has ancient roots around the globe to welcome spring with all kinds of joyous re-birthing festivals. Today, on the first day of May, we give thanks for (and celebrate the miracle of) all the new life blooming and sprouting up all around us. Winter is now behind us, the Earth is awakening, soils warming, and our daylight-filled hours are increasing to support plant growth.
This holiday has been celebrated in many cultures since Medieval times. For the Romans, May Day was a celebration of Flora, the goddess of wildflowers. In Roman, Greek, and for European cultures it marked the return of spring and was celebrated by gathering wildflowers, decorating a May Pole, and weaving ribbons around it as they danced and sang. These celebrations were intended to honor the Earth and the fertility of nature.
